I keep seeing a lot of reviews indicating a core drill is absolutely required...Its not; although I'd only recommend using a 1/2" drill for those of you are do-it-yourselfers. If you don't mow your own yard you are not a do-it-yourselfer. If you are not a sturdy person and the drill binds you will injure yourself and possibly tear a tendon or muscle. You'll also need an adapter for your 1/2" drill. The core bit threads don't start for about 1/3" so you'll need to either buy a longer adapter or you can get the cheaper one and use a cut off saw to cut the end of the core drill off that does not have threads. Search for "Drill Adapter 1-1/4"-7 Male to 1/2" Shank for Core Bits"I do have a bit of advice though from personal use.If making a horizontal hole you'll need someone to keep a hose on the bore hole to keep water going inside the hole or you'll get the core bit so hot the diamonds will burn out of the welds. If making a downward hole then just keep water in the bore hole and if possible suck the water out occasionally after its loaded with lots of grit and replace with clean water. If making a hole with an upward slope then you'll need a search for a dry bit rather than this wet bit.If at all possible do not stop and leave the bit in the hole or sediment will settle around the bit and you'll have an hour of fun getting it freed. After you have made about 2 or 3 inches of progress the bit will start binding often; remove and use a punch to break the core loose and remove by reinserting the bit and give it a short spin and the broken core will enter the core drill. Just pull the drill out and remove the adapter then insert a rod and tap the broken core out and repeat. If you have a 2' piece of rebar just grind one edge to create a wedge for breaking out the core.I'd also advise buying a cheap $35 1/2 drill from Harbor Freight because this is not conducive to a very long tool life. Once the drill is hot "and it will get hot" after 5 or 6" of progress you should put it in the shade and let it cool down for an hour and if you have 2 drills switch to the other.Lastly; make sure you are holding the drill in a way so that if it binds "and it will bind" the drill does not spin and smack your hand into something hard like limestone. (Its hurts and can break your hand) Also a sudden binding can jerk the dog $%^ out of your arm and tear something so try to hold it in a way that it jerks out of your hand rather than into it and when your drill binds; stop holding the drill button or you'll burn it up in seconds.I've used a dry core bit and 1/2 drill to bore though a 3' foundation by using a bunch of 1/2" extension adapters and saved 3 thousand dollars. I used this bit and the same harbor freight drill to drill 3 dozen fence post holes like the one shown in my images.Good luck and hope you save lots of $ because its the only reason to use a 1/2 drill rather than a core drill.
